Stazione Zoologica Anton Dohrn
The Stazione Zoologica – National Institute of Marine Biology Ecology and Biotechnology – (SZN) was founded in 1872 by Anton Dohrn in Naples (Southern Italy) and is the oldest marine biological research institution still in existence in Italy. The core mission of the SZN is to “understand marine biological systems and the evolution of marine life, to increase knowledge and understanding of Life at Sea, and to foster the eco‐sustainable use of marine resources”.
SZN staff is dedicated to preserving healthy ocean life and the ecosystem services it provides. Its staff members conduct research in marine biology, ecology, and biotechnology, and develop and manage research infrastructures to support the scientific community, with the overarching aim to support sustainable development. SZN also collaborates with other research institutions, SMEs and industries.
SZN current organization includes five Departments:
1) Biology and Evolution of Marine Organisms (BEOM);
2) Integrative Marine Ecology (EMI);
3) Eco-Sustainable Marine Biotechnology (BLUEBIO);
4) Marine Animal Conservation and Public Engagement (CAPE);
5) Research Infrastructures for Marine Biological Resources (RIMAR).
EU Research Infrastructures
The SZN is actively involved in EMBRC and other European Research Infrastructures recognized by ESFRI (European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures), i.e. distributed facilities that provide resources and services for research communities to conduct research and foster innovation.
EMBRC builds upon a legacy of a marine station ‘network’ originated from the idea and concept of Anton Dohrn 150 years ago: aiming to connect marine stations worldwide, strengthening collaboration, and enabling researchers to gain access to organisms, services and facilities to advance fundamental and applied marine research. The SZN is the Leading Institute of the Italian Node of EMBRC, composed as a Joint Research Unit of 16 partners, comprising Research Institutes, Universities, and Stakeholders.
The participation of the SZN in the EU ESFRI RIs is managed with the support of the RIMAR department. The SZN is committed to support implementation and operation of the RIs through other funding (e.g., PON-PRIMA and PNRR-related funds).
